Newsletter Term 1, Week 5, 2023

NAPLAN (National Assessment Program- Literacy and Numeracy)
Students in Year 3 and Year 5 will be sitting the assessments during Week 7 and 8 of this term. This is earlier than usual. On Tuesday the students in Years 3 & 5 sat the trial NAPLAN test. The focus of the trial was for the student to be familiar with the test and to test our IT and the NAPLAN platform. The NAPLAN assessments are linked to the Australian Curriculum. The aim is to determine whether students are developing the essential skills; predominately in literacy and numeracy, that they will need in life. It is important to understand that this is one form of assessment that is used to gather data about your child’s attainment of literacy and numeracy skills. At OLV, we use a variety of ongoing assessment and reporting processes to inform our teaching and support student learning.
In the media recently, you may have heard that parents and carers will get earlier, simpler and clearer information about their child’s NAPLAN achievement based on new, more rigorous national standards. If you have any questions regarding NAPLAN, please contact your child’s class teacher.
Pupil Free Day
Friday 10 March Pupil Free Day - Preschool will operate as normal
Our practice is to have our Pupil Free Days on the Friday prior to the long weekends in March and June. On Friday 10 March (preceding Adelaide Cup Long weekend) we will have our first Pupil Free Day (Preschool will be open).
OSHC is available, please book by ringing Sue.
Building Stage 1 Update
The issues with the sandy soil in the area where the building was demolished has been resolved with extra engineering. I have been advised by Mossops Builders that the remaining section of the slab will be poured next week and the steel erection will follow soon after. They anticipate to catch up for their lost time.
School Reports - Changes on the Horizon
As you would be aware there are two formal School Reports, mid and end of year. Catholic Education SA has adopted SEQTA as a Learning Management System and this year the “School Report” module is being rolled out. This means that the report we have used in previous years will change to the reporting system being used within SEQTA and it is different from what we have previously had. If you have a child at St Michael’s / Nazareth / Mt Carmel you may be familiar with the SEQTA system, however for the Primary School level, SEQTA is slowly being rolled out a little at a time.
Stranger Danger
There was an incident earlier this week where 2 Oceanview students were approached by a person in a car luring them with iceblocks to get in. Luckily they did not. Please talk to your children about being safe and alerting them to dangers, especially if they walk or ride home.
This will be followed in class with teachers discussing remaining safe and being safe.

Catholic Identity
A LENTEN PRAYER: FAST FROM, FEAST ON
During Lent, let us…
Fast from judging others;
Feast on the Christ within them.
Fast from the emphasis on difference;
Feast on the unity of life.
Fast from apparent darkness;
Feast on the reality of light.
Fast on thoughts of illness;
Feast on the healing power of God.
Fast from words of pollute;
Feast on phrases that purify.
Fast from discontent; feast on gratitude.
Fast from anger; feast on patience.
Fast from pessimism; feast on patience.
Fast from complaining; feast on appreciation.
Fast from worry; feast on trust in God’s Care.
Fast from unrelenting pressure;
Feast on unceasing prayer.
Fast from facts that depress;
Feast on varities that uplift.
Fast from lethargy; feast on enthusiasm.
Fast from thoughts that weaken;
Feast on promises that inspire.
Fast from shadows of sorrow;
Feast on the sunlight of serenity.
Fast from problems that overwhelm;
Feast on prayer that undergirds.
Fast from bitterness, feast on forgiveness.
Fast from self concern;
Feast on compassion for others.
Fast from personal anxiety; feast on eternal truth.
Fast from discouragement; feast on hope.

Our Foundations for Learning through Wellbeing
Dear OLV Families
At OLV we Inspire Truth with God, our learning, ourselves and our environment. We believe that every child is made in the image of God and is a capable and competent learner and leader. We are inspired by our Dominican tradition and our Visitation Story which helps us to hear the whisper of the Holy Spirit to be best we can be.
You may be aware of the current research that is creating an increasing understanding and awareness of human development for wellbeing. At OLV we are committed to creating enabling, engaging and welcoming conditions for our students to thrive, learn and lead. Catholic Education South Australia have developed a wellbeing document-LEARNWELL Our Foundations for Learning through Wellbeing to support and enhance current practices. To contribute to this important work we are inviting families to participate in a 3-5 minute survey with two questions:
What values and learning qualities do you see your child/children developing now at OLV?
What values and learning qualities do you hope your child/children will have developed by the time they leave OLV?
Your responses will support us in reviewing our current Behaviour Management Policy as well as innovate and improve our current wellbeing practices. Please click the link below to participate in the survey: Surveys are due Friday 17th March.

Shrove Tuesday
Shrove Tuesday is celebrated the day before Ash Wednesday. At OLV we had wonderful help from our families to ensure all our children ate a pancake. We thank our family volunteers for their generous time in cooking up a feast for all of us to enjoy. We had the pleasure of having Father Roderick and Sister Marie join us.

Ash Wednesday
We began the season of Lent on Ash Wednesday. We thank 5/6AM and 6MI for leading us in our Ash Wednesday Mass. We thank Father Roderick for being our celebrant and reminding us of Jesus’ unconditional love. Below are the Prayers of the Faithful written by the students.
Jenna: We pray for Pope Francis, Archbishop Patrick O’Regan and all the Church leaders that they continue to be the forgiving face of Jesus.
Lord, hear us.
Ajok: We pray for our OLV Parish, Father Roderick, Father Peter, Sister Marie and the parishioners. May they be guided by the spirit in leading the people of God to deeper holiness during this time of Lent.
Lord hear us.
Patrick: We pray for our Australian and world leaders. That they guide people everywhere to recognise how powerful forgiveness and reconciliation is.
Lord, hear us.
Leonardo: We pray for Our Lady of the Visitation learning community and that these ashes we have received today, remind us to follow Jesus.
Lord, hear us.
Amelia: We pray for people who are sick and those who have died. May they be in our thoughts and prayers often.
Lord Hear Us.
Caitlyn: We pray for ourselves, that this Lenten Season we change our hearts to help those less fortunate than us by donating to the Project Compassion Appeal.
Lord, hear us.

Project Compassion
During the Season of Lent we journey together to raise funds and awareness for Project Compassion. The theme for Project Compassion 2023 is For All Future Generations: Mary’s great YES! The Yes she spoke when the Angel told her she was to become the mother of Jesus-And Mary’s Prayer of Praise she says to Elizabeth:
“All generations will call me blessed” (Gospel of Luke (1:46–55)

We thank our OLV family community in advance for their generous support and donations to help those most marginalised.

Girls: Ribbon/clip in hair
Boys: Orange ribbon around wrist or orange wristband
Familes are welcome to attend.
Nude Food Tuesdays
Nude Food is simply food that is not wrapped in foil, plastic or commercial packaging. OLV is promoting Nude Food to empower students to make conscious choices about what they eat, and encourage them to think about their impact on the environment. You might be amazed with how enthused your child can become on this…
To pack Nude Food you will need:
• Cutlery from home is better than throwaway plastic ones
• Reusable containers for putting all of your food, snacks and drinks into
• Lunch boxes that have lots of separate sections can be useful to avoid lost lids or containers
Be sure to label everything with your child’s name!
Try to avoid:
• Zip lock or plastic bags, plastic wrap or aluminium foil
• Single serve yoghurts and cheese
• Single use plastic forks and spoons
• Pre-packaged food, i.e. biscuits, snack bars and chips
