Newsletter Term 3 Week 2, 2023

Welcome back Term 3
Welcome back to you all and a very special welcome to new friends and families. It was heartening to see the new Reception students and new Growing into Reception students starting. Their enthusiasm is infectious. It is a pleasure to have all new families be a part of our community.
New Building
The Reception and Year 1 students, parents and teachers are loving our new area. The building has a sense of calmness and already great learning experiences are taking place in it. Lynne Sharratt, in Clarity talks about the classroom environment as the Third Teacher, she states, “The learning space becomes a strategic tool in promoting creativity, originality, perseverance, risk taking, learning from mistakes, problem solving, resolving conflict, collaboration and critical thinking’.
Parents welcomed the opportunity to view the new building with many favourable comments. The new Early Years Playground will be completed by next week, it is starting to take shape and the students are eager to begin to use it.
Stage 2 – Middle Years Building – the documentation and plans for this building are nearly completed. We will tender this building (following CESA’s Tender Procedures) by the end of August. Our aim is to begin building at the start of October, with an aim of classes being in the building by the start of Term 3 2024. Funding for this building project has been approved.
This is an exciting time for our school.

Parent Teacher Conversations
Parent Teacher Conversations (Parent Interviews) will be conducted next week with Wednesday 9 August being the late night. Amelia Maddern's class 5/6AM will have their interviews in Week 5 (The code for those interviews is vq5g6)
If you are yet to do so, times can be made via the online booking system for interviews. Please follow the information to use the new School Interview system www.schoolinterviews.com.au:

These times will be sent to your child’s teacher. Interviews times are 15 minute blocks. You will receive a confirmation email once you have booked.
Communication between home and school is vital for effective teaching to take place. These interviews will give both teachers and parents an opportunity to discuss how your child is progressing. Meetings will be for 15 minutes and please be punctual so that everyone can get their full appointment time. Children are not allowed outside to play during interview times because of safety and supervision concerns. Year 2 & 3 Classes, Learning Conversations will take place in the new Early Years Building.
Living Learning Leading Parent and Caregiver Survey
Please can I ask for three to five minutes of your time to complete a short survey to support us in always striving towards excellence in our performance as a school. This LLL survey is an opportunity for you to tell how things are for you and your family and know that we value your feedback and will try to respond to the information that you provide.
The feedback does NOT include the data of individuals; rather, feedback involves graphs based on feedback from all parents and caregivers. To ensure anonymity, aggregated scores are not provided for groups of less than four parents or caregivers. It is your impressions that we are seeking. There are no right or wrong answers.
If you have more than one child at school, please respond based on the experience of their oldest child at the school. This information was emailed this week.
Parking, road safety, driver etiquette
School drop-off and pick-up times are busy for everyone. For everyone’s sake, we want this to happen in a safe and courteous manner, including not parking or stopping your vehicle in a ‘no parking/standing’ area; this includes on solid yellow lines and across driveways.
Therefore, please demonstrate consideration and patience, as well as travelling slowly around the school.

Catholic Identity
Prayer
A Dominican Blessing
May God the Father bless us.
May God the Son heal us.
May God the Holy Spirit enlighten us,
and give us
eyes to see with,
ears to hear with,
hands to do the work of God with,
feet to walk with,
a mouth to preach the word of salvation with,
and the angel of peace to watch over us and lead us at last, by our Lord’s gift, to the Kingdom.
Amen.
Student Representative Council (SRC)
Congratulations to our new SRC’s.
At Our Lady of the Visitation School we are committed to fulfilling our promise to our students to see them thrive and have a voice. One of the many ways we do this is through having SRC’s who attend meetings and seek feedback from their class members.
This semester our SRC’s will:
- Lead social Justice initiative
- Lead Masses and Liturgies: Father’s Day Liturgy 30.8.23 (Week 6)
- Continue to support ecological initiatives
As leaders for the world God desires, we will begin to reflect on what is means to be Moral, Compassionate and Ecologically Aware and how to be Spiritually Aware and Inspired by Faith by using the CESA Key Capabilities continua as a reflective tool.

St Dominic Feast Day Mass
We thank our student leaders for leading our St Dominic’s Feast Day Mass on Thursday 3rd August and Father Roderick for being our celebrant. As a Dominican school, at the core of our charism is to seek Truth in all things, through a dialogue of awe and wonder. Thank you Father Roderick for reminding us St Dominic’s love for prayer, study, community and contemplation.

Sister Marie Visit
We are so blessed to have Sr Marie be part of our school community. Sr Marie is a Sister of St Joseph.
2CJ, 4KK and 5JN had the honour to hear her story and learn more about the life and legacy of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop.

LEARNWELL
Our Foundations for Learning through Wellbeing
We have been successful in obtaining a Parents in Education (PIE) grant. The PIE grant program is supported by the Office of the Minister for Education, Training, and Skills, Government of South Australia.
We have invited Madhavi Nawana Parker to facilitate the parent session on children’s anxiety and resilience. Madhavi presented to our staff at our Staff Formation Day last term and we all found her engaging with valuable and practical information to share. For more information about Madhavi and Positive Minds Australia please visit https://positivemindsaustralia.com.au/
We are seeking a day and time to facilitate the parent session. For this reason, we are asking families to complete the survey below by nominating a preferred day and time to assist our planning. We sincerely thank you for your time.

THANK YOU, Your voice matters to us
A sincere thank you to the parents who have already replied to a short (3 to 5 minute) survey about our school’s performance. Your voice matters to us, as we work in partnership for the best learning outcomes for our children.
Remember that to protect your confidentiality all surveys are anonymous. All answers go directly to National School Improvement Partnerships where the results are analysed for our school. Answers from individual surveys will NOT be reported back to OLV. National School Improvement Partnerships staff are bound by a Code of Ethics and follow strict professional conduct.
How to complete the survey
- For each statement, you are asked to rate how well you think our school is performing by selecting one of six responses. The responses are numbered 1 to 6, with number 1 being the lowest or worst rating and number 6 being the highest or best rating.
- If you have more than one child at our school, and your perceptions differ for each child, please respond with respect to your perceptions related to the oldest child enrolled at the school.
- There are no 'right' or 'wrong' answers. Your opinion is what is wanted.
- Please answer all questions.
- Some statements may be fairly similar to other statements. Don't worry about this. Simply give your opinion about all statements.
To get started, go to www.NSIPartnerships.com.au and enter the access code: OLTVLLLP
The Survey will be opened until 25 August 2023. If you have any questions, please see Frank Detullio or Jhovana Fenu

First Aid Training in the Senior Unit
The Year 5 and 6’s were fortunate to participate in a St John SA program today which taught our students how to apply first aid.
The First Aid in Schools Program is a community initiative delivered by qualified trainers from St John SA. The aim is to equip children with the first aid skills they need if faced with a medical emergency. The course was fun and informative with hands-on techniques and demonstrations.

Fuji Girls Visiting OLV School
Last Monday our students came together with the Fuji students from Japan and learned about Australian animals during a cultural/language exchange session. Vicky Knight coordinated the session. This gathering helped students build closer ties and share knowledge with lots of enthusiasm.

St Dominic
2CJ
2CJ Have spent some time learning about St Dominic in preparing to celebrate his feast day which is the same day as St Mary MacKillop.
OLV is a Dominican school, and we try to live out the 4 pillars of the Dominican tradition: study, prayer, community, and service/ministry.
The children spent an art lesson drawing St Dominic based on the following image and then were asked to recall facts about him, with the aim being to live more like St Dominic.
- St Dominic is the patron saint of astronomers.
- St Dominic often went barefoot and didn’t sleep in a bed so he could relate to the poor of his community.
- St Dominic sold some of his possessions to buy food for the poor.
- It only took 13 years for St Dominic to be canonised after his death in 1221.
- St Dominic believed that education was so important that he started Dominican schools.
- St Dominic taught heretics about God.

St Dominic - Senior Unit - Years 4-6
To celebrate the life and work of St Dominic, whose values we closely follow as a Dominican school, the students in years 4-6 looked at St Dominic's special prayer.
We had a particular focus on the words...
May God give us eyes to see to God, ears to hear God, and hands to bring God’s work into the world.
...with the students focussing on how they can continue this today and writing prayers to reflect this.

St Dominic - Year 1
Year 1TB and Year 1JI learnt about St Dominic this week. We focused on what he did and how he helped others.

Single-Use Squeeze Pouches
As part of OLV’s Nude Food initiative, we encourage families to find alternatives to single-use squeeze yoghurt and custard pouches. It’s environmentally friendly and much cheaper than single-use options. You can buy large tubs of yoghurt or custard and put portions into a reusable pouch (“Little Mashies”) or a small, reusable container.
One of our parents showed us how easy it is to use Little Mashies pouches. Simply rinse and refill!

Eloise and George proudly enjoying their new Mashies
You can purchase these reusable pouches from Woolworths for $5 each.
